What is the essence of social work?

Social work is, above all, a human, respectful, and compassionate form of support. Social workers assist individuals, families, and communities who are experiencing difficult moments, periods of vulnerability, or significant life transitions. Whether related to increased stress or relational, family, or workplace challenges, the goal is to provide a safe and supportive space to better understand the situation and restore balance.

Each person is viewed holistically, taking into account their lived experience, strengths, resources, and environment. Together, concrete and individualized solutions are explored at a respectful pace, with the aim of supporting autonomy, adaptability, and empowerment. Social work is grounded in values of respect, dignity, equity, and social justice. It seeks to support individuals in the defense of their rights, reduce social barriers, and promote improved quality of life and lasting well-being.

In accordance with the current legal framework (Bill 21), social work includes the assessment of social functioning, the development and implementation of an intervention plan, and support for the restoration of social functioning, in interaction with the person’s living environment.

Social workers are university-trained professionals and members of the Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec. Their role is to provide professional, ethical, and personalized support within a trusting relationship, helping each person navigate their challenges with greater clarity and a sense of security.
